New principal takes over reins at Cain Middle School

A new principal took over the reins July 1 at Maurine Cain Middle School in Heath, according to a recent announcement by RISD Superintendent Dr. Gene Burton.

Jason Johnston, who was an assistant principal at Webb Middle School in the Garland ISD, replaces Sarah Watkins, who is now serving as Special Projects Coordinator for the RISD Curriculum & Instruction department.

Cain Middle School is located at the intersection of Horizon Rd. and State Highway 549,

Johnston will earn a salary of $83, 338 per year.

“Mr. Johnston brings valuable experience to his new position as principal at Maurine Cain Middle School,” said Dr. Burton.  “I know that he will bring strong leadership to the Cain campus.”

During Johston’s tenure at Webb, the school was consistently rated as “Recognized,” according to the RISD announcement. Prior to serving as an assistant principal, he was a business teacher and a coach for Garland ISD.

As an administrator, Johnston has been responsible for facility maintenance, staff development, transportation, discipline, textbooks, personnel issues, safety, the master schedule and the curricular departments. 

He also served as the TAKS testing coordinator, the PSAT coordinator and the master technology trainer. 

The new principal holds a Master of Educational Administration from Texas A&M-Commerce and a BBA in Marketing from the University of North Texas.  He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Educational Administration at Texas A&M-Commerce. 

“I am excited about the opportunity to join the Rockwall ISD and specifically the Cain Middle school family,” said the new principal. 

“I look forward to sharing in the many successes of our students. I eagerly anticipate working with our students, staff, parents and community in fostering a safe and challenging environment that provides students with the encouragement and opportunity to achieve high levels of success both academically and socially.”
