Rockwall-Heath’s highly-recruited star center Austin Woods announced yesterday that he has verbally committed to attend and play football at the University of Oklahoma next year in Norman OK.

The 6’5″ 295 lb. offensive lineman is rated as the fifth best high school center in the nation by Scout.com and ranked No. 220 on the Rivals.com National Top 250 list for 2010.

He said it was a difficult decision, narrowing down his final decision between so many choices.

“I’ve taken a lot of visits and I’ve talked to a lot of coaches,” he told Rivals.com, “and it just came down to where I felt the most comfortable and the tradition they have at OU.”

“When you think of the top football programs in the country, you think of OU,” Austin Woods said. “It was just the right fit for me.”

Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech were reportedly among Woods’ other primary college suitors.

Last year he did not allow a sack and had 35 pancake blocks on opposing defenders.

Rockwall-Heath coach Mickey Moss said yesterday that he is expecting and counting on Woods to again anchor the Hawks’ offensive line this year, which Moss said is one of the Hawks’ real strengths in 2010.

Off the field, Woods has a 4.0 GPA and scored a 1600 on his college SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test).

He is the son of Rockwall-Heath coach Don Woods, who coaches the Hawks’ running backs and special teams.

Verbal commitments are nonbinding. The first day 2010 football recruits can sign letters of intent is Feb. 3.
