Rockwall’s nationally-ranked girls pole-vaulter Shelby Kennard said she had a bad day at the worst possible time but still finished second in that event at 11’9,” behind Pflugerville Hendrickson’s Natasha Masterson who cleared 12’0,” at Friday’s Class 4A State track and field meet at Mike Myers stadium in Austin.

Kennard said it was 13 inches lower than her personal best. The University of Kentucky signee also finished second last year in the State 5A meet.

Rockwall’s Alicia Janke, Royse City’s Megan Frausto and Rockwall Heath’s Jasmine Williams all finished third in their respective events in front of 13,942 fans.

Janke also cleared 11’9″ in the pole vault, but finished third because she had more misses than Kennard.

Frausto finished the 800-meter run with a  time of 2:17.56, behind winner Kristyn Williams of Mansfield Timberview, 2:10.23, and Lizzy Whitney, Montgomery, 2:12.00.

In the 100-meter dash, Williams ran an 11.93, but was barely nosed-out  by winner Richanda Hall, Mansfield Timberview, 11.80, and Chandrell Stephens, Forney, 11.89.

In team points, the two Rockwall girls earned 14 points, finishing in 16th place. Royse City and Rockwall-Heath each earned six points, finishing in a four way tie for 31st place.

Mansfield Timberview easily won the girls meet with 86 points, taking the State crown away from Lancaster, which had won eight straight Class 4A titles. They had 41 points.

Williams also was one of five athletes who participated in a Class of 2009 graduation ceremony on the Myers stadium track.

The UIL organized the graduation event because many athletes competing at the meet had conflicts with their graduations once the meet was pushed back three weeks because of the swine flu outbreak.

UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt gave a brief speech before 53 graduates (two were valedictorians) were introduced to the crowd before the start of the Class 2A and 4A running finals. The graduates, lined up single file on the track, crossing the finish line to get their diplomas.

Each graduate had their picture taken and will be presented with a DVD of the ceremony.
