ROCKWALL-Five Rockwall Independent School District elementary schools were named “higher performing schools” for 2008 in numerous subject areas by a national group that focuses on increasing student achievement.

Amy Parks-Heath Elementary, Virginia Reinhardt Elementary, Nebbie Williams Elementary, Howard Dobbs Elementary and Grace Hartman Elementary were among Texas schools recognized by “Just for the Kids,” a program of the National Center for Educational Achievement.

The Just for the Kids Higher Performing lists are a more select group of schools than those recognized under state accountability. Although 68 percent of elementary schools in Texas were identified as Recognized or Exemplary in 2008, the Just For Kids analysis deemed just 20% of elementary schools to be high performing.

“It is an honor for these schools to be recognized as part of the Just for Kids Higher Performing Schools in Texas,” said Dr. Debbie Koehn Rockwall ISD Assistant Superintendent.

“The students, teachers, parents and administrators of these campuses are to be commended as they are the ones who work diligently day in and day out to ensure success.”

Several measures were used to determine the Just for the Kids high-performing schools, including academic growth and “college and career readiness” benchmarks. The subject areas assessed varied by school level.

At Nebbie Williams Elementary, for example, reading and writing were included in the report as higher performing.

Amy Parks-Heath Elementary was noted for high performance in mathematics, reading, science and writing.

Grace Hartman Elementary is higher performing in mathematics, reading, science and writing.

Virginia Reinhardt Elementary was awarded higher performing status in science.
