Rockwall ISD athletic director leaving to coach football again in Garland ISD

Rockwall ISD athletic director Mark Elam has decided to step down from his current position soon to coach football again and has accepted the head football coaching position at Garland Naaman Forest High School.

According to Garland ISD athletic director Homer Johnson, the school board must still approve the move, but he doesn’t expect a problem.

Elam, 54, last coached at Rockwall in 2004 before becoming the full-time athletic director. He was 29-41 in seven sevens at Rockwall.

Prior to Rockwall, Elam led North Mesquite to four consecutive playoff berths and a No. 1 state ranking in 1996. His career coaching record is 149-88-9.

“I knew he wanted to get back into coaching for a while,” Johnson said. “We’re very happy to have him. We feel like we got a good one.”

Elam will replaces Bill Patterson, who left to become head football coach for Justin Northwest after leading Naaman Forest to back-to-back 9-3 seasons.
